Perched on the edge of Bayou St. John, Liuzza’s Restaurant and Bar has been a Mid-City landmark drawing in locals and visitors since 1947.

The menu at Liuzza’s is a seamless blend of both Cajun and Italian cuisines, featuring recipes that have been passed down through the family for generations.

“It’s definitely a family neighborhood restaurant,” says Lori, one of the owners at Liuzza’s. “My husband’s mother was even a waitress here in the 1950s.”

The sign outside features a big mug of beer overflowing with foamy goodness that reads “Beer In A Frosted Mug.” It’s one thing they’re famous for serving — now you know why this was such a popular spot after work for locals.

“We’ve been serving the frosted mugs ever since the beginning, it’s part of what makes this place unique.”

Liuzza’s is also putting a clever twist on the classic New Orleans muffuletta sandwich.

“Early on, we all loved the muffuletta, but felt like there was just too much bread,” says Lori.

Just like that, the Frenchuletta was born. What is a Frenchuletta? It’s all of the same great flavors of the muffuletta, but it’s served hot on French bread. (Don’t even bother trying to copy this masterpiece — it’s actually trademarked!) If you think you’ll have room, you’ll definitely want to order a side of Liuzza’s famous onion rings.

The family is also taking a page out of another region of the Gulf Coast and serving up delicious frozen Bushwackers. A Bushwacker is made with coffee liqueur, rum and Crème de Cacao — these will creep up on you, so pace yourself!

Nothing has changed since 1947, and that’s alright with us.

Pralines and New Orleans go together like peas and carrots … errr, sugar and butter?

Southern Candymakers takes the classic New Orleans candy and keeps it old school, which means they use only the freshest ingredients to make their pralines in-house. 

Preparing the pralines from scratch has a unique effect on unsuspecting pedestrians. 

“Our best advertisement is the smell going right out those doors and onto the street,” says MJ, the Marketing Manager. “People always want to stop here.” 

And if the smell is bringing the customers in, the taste is what keeps them coming back for more.

Part of the magic at Southern Candymakers is getting to watch the praline and chocolate kitchens in action. Everything is made in fresh, small batches to ensure the best taste. There’s no better time to eat a praline than right out of the kitchen.

“Lots of people visit here every time they are in New Orleans,” says MJ. “We’ve even had people in here during their honeymoon.”

“People always ask me how long our pralines last,” says MJ. “You wouldn’t wait three weeks to eat a croissant, would you?”

But if you have to wait, MJ later assured us that Southern Candymakers delicious pralines ship well around the country, so don’t fret. 

Southern Candymakers still finds time to change up its original creamy pralines with chewy ones. The team handmakes the caramel and mixes it with the original pralines, and adding a “hint” of maple. These ooey-gooey twists on the classic are giving the originals a run for their money. 

“We like to give our candymakers room to be creative and try new things,” says MJ. “Unless it’s Mardi Gras … then we just try to survive the rush.”

As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice the exposed brick walls, large seating area and cheese selections sitting out to browse at your leisure. Richard Sutton, Owner of St. James Cheese Company, talked a little bit about the mission at St. James Cheese Company.

“We have cheese from all over the world and about 250 to 300 different varieties,” he says. “We really want to make it the kind of place that people who know nothing about cheese can come and try it out. It’s kind of like going to an ice cream shop, but with cheese.”

And if you want some guidance, the team at St. James Cheese Company will gladly help you put together a cheese plate that is made specifically for you.

But if you ask the locals in New Orleans, St. James Cheese Company is also one of the hotspots for lunch in the Warehouse District. And since you’re in the Warehouse District, there are some special items on the menu that are exclusive to the Warehouse District.

The Croque Monster, as the name suggests, is a monstrous, double-decker ham and cheese sandwich that is broiled and served on Texas toast–we highly recommend using a fork and knife to tackle this gooey sandwich. For a little extra, you can “Madame” your Croque Monster and add an egg on top.

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated and traditional experience, the Ploughman’s Lunch is an English classic. The Ploughman’s Lunch features farmhouse Cheddar, Stilton and goat’s cheeses, house-made pork pie or pate, small green salad and hearty bread–you won’t leave hungry after this one.

When you catch a craving for a hamburger, the only way to solve it is with … a hamburger! Have you ever tried eating a salad when you really want a burger? Doesn’t work.

The Company Burger is the solution to all of your burger-craving woes. If it feels like a chain, it’s not. Nina, the General Manager, made sure we knew that.

“People are always surprised when we tell them we’re not a chain,” she says. “We’re locally owned and operated.”

And when you’re at a place called The Company Burger, why wouldn’t you order The Company Burger? The restaurant’s namesake sandwich comes sporting two patties, bread and butter pickles, red onion and, as Nina says, “good American cheese.” Adding bacon and a fried egg on top of your burger is a must!

Okay, so is this burger just sounding too ordinary at this point? We have two words that you need to hear — mayo bar. Even if you don’t typically dig mayo, you need to stop by this bar and give it a shot. From chipotle and creole honey mustard to basil and garlic, there’s a mayo for you. Don’t forget to add some jalapeños that are pickled fresh in-house! One bite out of this burger and you’ll know why we sent you. Everything from the patties to the toppings just works. 

And since you’re on vacation, no trip to The Company Burger is considered complete without a milkshake. The shakes are made with a smooth and creamy soft serve and with in-house ingredients — even the chocolate is a 100-year-old family recipe.

So, maybe you didn’t exactly come to New Orleans with Mexican food in mind, but don’t let that discourage you from trying El Gato Negro.

El Gato Negro just a hop, skip and a jump from The Mercantile Hotel. As soon as you are seated, you will be welcomed with free chips and salsa. Joseph, the Assistant Manager, came through with a recommendation to help take our chip dipping experience to the next level.

“You really have to try our guacamole,” he says. “It’s all prepared fresh tableside.”

And “fresh” is an understatement. Enjoy the show as your server cuts open whole avocados and spoons them out into a mixing bowl with all of the ingredients–a delicious treat that is worth the wait!

The guacamole isn’t the only thing that is fresh at El Gato Negro. Joseph spoke to us about the mission.

“Our goal is to make sure everyone leaves feeling full and healthy. That’s why everything we use, from our food to our margaritas, is always fresh.”

And the quality of the protein at El Gato Negro something to be admired. 

“Juan, the owner, buys all of his beef from Braveheart,” says Joseph. “It’s all vegetarian fed cattle and we’re the only place in New Orleans that uses it.” 

So, it’s no surprise that the most popular item on the menu is the fajitas. 

“Everyone keeps coming back for our fajitas,” says Joseph. 

Juan is going the extra mile to deliver a truly authentic experience by making his own tequila. 

“Juan grows his own agave on his farm in Mexico for his tequila,” says Joseph.

 There’s a new sandwich shop on the block in the Lower Garden District and it’s not what you may expect from a typical New Orleans lunch spot. 

Turkey & the Wolf was opened in 2016 with the hopes of keeping a simple menu. The menu is filled with creative and innovative sandwiches and “not sandwiches.” Swade, a sous chef at Turkey & the Wolf, talked about the menu.

“Most of the people in the back of the house have worked in fine dining around New Orleans,” he says. “We wanted to open a place where we could be creative with the menu, but keep it small at the same time.” 

And the goal for the food was simple according to Swade. 

The sandwich menu at Turkey & the Wolf doesn’t mean that they are sacrificing quality of ingredients or not using techniques they have carried over from the fine dining world. Swade pointed out some more kitchen strategies.

“We just make whatever we think tastes good, like our fried bologna sandwich with salt and vinegar chips. What’s not to like about that?”

“Our goal with our sandwiches is to make a fully composed dish in sandwich form,” he says. “We’re all extremely serious about our food here.” 

Sandwich shops aren’t exactly scarce in New Orleans, so we asked Swade what is setting Turkey & the Wolf apart from the crowd. 

“Most sandwich shops in New Orleans are serving Po Boys,” he says. “Nothing against Po Boys, but we’re probably one of the few places that isn’t serving them.” 

And it’s not enough to just have great food. Turkey & the Wolf is keeping fun at the top of the list. 

“It’s just a really fun place to be and work,” says Swade. “We feel like we’ve created a place where locals want to come hangout.”

There are some things that you absolutely have to eat when you come to New Orleans. Somewhere near the top of that list is pralines. 

And if it’s not? Well, it should be. 

Now, we wouldn’t dream of dissing the classic sugary goodness that is a praline, but we also know when to tip our caps to innovators in the confectionery game. 

Mister Apple is a candy shop on North Peters that’s dipping apples in just about everything sweet you can imagine, including pralines. That’s right — we finally have the technology to create the fabled praline covered apple. 

All jokes aside, the praline apples at Mister Apple are absolutely scrumptious. Timothy, the owner of Mister Apple, started out doing the classic caramel and candy apples. 

“Everything is made in-house, you get the smell of a real candy store when you walk in here.”

“But people kept wanting to know why we don’t do a praline apple,” he says.

Timothy listened to the town’s cry, and we’re glad he did. The praline apples start off as caramel pecan apples, before being dipped in the warm praline mixture. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your dentist.)

The first bite out of the praline apple, and Timothy’s recipe of “sugar, sugar … and a little more sugar” starts to make sense. 

The praline train doesn’t stop at apples. Mister Apple is serving up plenty of the classic pralines, chocolate dipped pralines and even a chocolate chunk brownie laced with pralines. 

And there are a few intangible ingredients that go into every treat. 

“We put a lot of pride and love into everything we do,” says Timothy. 

That must be why everything here tastes so good.

 Let’s be honest, you want a beignet. It’s part of the New Orleans experience. But not all beignets are created equal, and there are plenty of spots to devour the doughy, sugary treats.

Café Beignet on Royal is a beignet spot you’ll want to pump the brakes for. This French-inspired roadside bistro is overflowing with charm — and beignets.

“Café Beignet specializes in beignets, which are hand cut and fresh to order,” says Miles, Director of Business Development.

The inside of the café is quaint and cozy, with vintage checkered tiles covering the floor and chairs with heart-shaped backs. Most locals opt to sit outside, in the courtyard under the shade. (As it turns out, the local birds are also fans of beignets, so don’t be surprised if you meet some adorable little-winged friends.)

So you don’t have much of a sweet tooth in the morning? Although we’re going to insist you try the beignets anyways, Café Beignet is far from a one-trick pony.

“In addition to the traditional beignets and coffee, we offer a complete breakfast menu, New Orleans specialty lunch items, pastries and a full-service bar,” says Miles. “Just about anything you might like to have during your stay in the French Quarter.”

If history is any guide, there are no brakes on this powdered sugar-fueled train.

“Café Beignet has been operating for 27 years and continues to grow,” says Miles. “We cater to people from all over the world, but we love to service our locals as well.”

Acme Oyster House

Whether it’s your first visit to New Orleans or you live here, you’ve probably heard of Acme Oyster House.

To get the whole story, you have to go back more than a century. The original Acme Café opened in 1910 on Royal Street. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the first location, and Acme Oyster House set up shop on Iberville in 1924.

Today, its red glowing neon sign is a beacon of hope for oyster lovers wandering the streets of New Orleans. And one visit is all it takes to get people to make Acme part of their New Orleans itinerary.

“I think the reason people come back to Acme is the experience they have when they come dine with us. We offer great food, and the atmosphere can’t be beaten.”

But the atmosphere at Acme isn’t just what’s hanging on the walls — it’s the people. One of the greatest is Master Shucker “Stormin” Norman, who didn’t exactly go through what you would consider a traditional hiring process.

“I stopped in to get a beer back in 1978,” says Norman. “They needed help for Mardi Gras, and I just never left.”

Norman might look familiar when you see him, because he’s pretty famous, shucking oysters everywhere from the Grammys to the Masters. He has a certain magnetic effect on the people in New Orleans.

“I’m like a musician,” says Norman. “I bring people to this restaurant.”

And if you’re looking for tips on how to properly consume an oyster, class is always in session.

“I eat them with a squeeze of lemon and cocktail sauce straight from the shell,” says Norman.

Taking a leisurely stroll through the Lower Garden District is one of our favorite things to do in the Big Easy. One of our favorite places to start? Atchafalaya.

The name “Atchafalaya” originally comes from the Choctaw word for “winding river.” The shotgun style building itself, located just two blocks from the Mighty Mississippi, dates back to the 1800s. Originally owned by a family that immigrated from Italy in the early 1900s, the Atchafalaya that stands today has undergone quite a few transformations. After Katrina, Café Atchafalaya was remodeled using materials salvaged materials from the hurricane.

Now, owned by Rachael Jaffe and Tony Tocco, Atchafalaya is a restaurant that continues to embrace “New Orleans’ culinary traditions while pushing boundaries.”

Atchafalaya is well-known for having a brunch that most places can only hope to match. One unique aspect of Atchafalaya is the Bloody Mary Bar. Choose your own vodka from the menu, and make your way down to customize your Bloody Mary just the way you like it!

“All of our vegetables and mixes are made fresh and in-house,” says Rachael, one of the owners at Atchafalaya. “We even have a green tomatillo mix that is really popular and different.”

Brunch starts off with warm and spicy Jalapeño Cornbread with real bits of corn baked into the bread — resist the urge to load up on these bad boys, because you’ll want to save room.

If you’re having a hard time deciding on your main course, the Eggs Atchafalaya is tried and true. Hot buttered blue crab is piled on top of two fried green tomatoes, served on a bed of Rockefeller spinach and topped with hollandaise. The crab meat is so delicate and buttery that it melts in your mouth!

Don’t plan on making it down Magazine until later? Atchafalaya is open seven days a week for dinner from 6 to 10 p.m.

As they say, “You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning.”
